Be Ready to Stop.

Everyone knows that maintaining vehicles is really important.  From brake discs to tires and suspension, keeping a car in good condition sometimes means the difference between life and death.  Keeping an eye on car parts on a regular basis and being alert to any changes in performance can also save a lot of money in repair bills.  The longer problems are left, the more likely they are to lead to further damage, and more costly replacement parts.

One of the obvious major safety features of a car is its brakes.  Any heavy item that travels at speed is extremely dangerous and needs to be able to stop quickly and efficiently.  Modern motors are usually equipped with good quality, anti lock braking systems which allow controlled and quick deceleration and halts.  Older models may have less effective systems, and rely more on the driver preventing skidding and loss of control.  Having said this, cars with anti lock braking systems do not replace the need for cautious, sensible and defensive driving.  Regardless of the kind of brakes which are fitted to a vehicle, a driver needs to pay careful attention to a car’s braking to spot any potential problems as early as possible.

Car braking systems should be checked by a qualified person on a regular basis, though there are several ways in which a car owner or driver can keep an eye on brakes.  One of which is to check brake fluid levels under the hood.  The level should be between the minimum and maximum markers, and there should be no signs of leakage.  If the fluid level drops quickly, professional advice should be sought as this can be indicative of underlying serious problems.  If the vehicle pulls or shudders during braking then it should be inspected as soon as possible and also if the brake pedal itself feels different (more spongy/hard) when used.  Noises such as grating and squealing can be a sign of wear among other things, and any burning smell associated with the brakes should be investigated as soon as possible.

Ordinary wear to
brake discs and pads can become dangerous if ignored, and can be very expensive to replace.  The longer worn brake pads are ignored, the more they can cause damage to the brake discs, which are far more costly to replace.  There are numerous kinds of brake discs available, each intended to provide certain advantages.  The majority of regular road car owners stick to standard brake discs, which usually suffice and can last well if properly maintained and checked by a professional on a regular basis.

Major car manufacturers all strive to produce innovative technology in new models, providing, among other things, improved braking systems.  All these developments can help improve vehicle safety, but it does not replace the need for drivers to be vigilant and sensible.  People should never drive when not alert (for example after drinking alcohol or when they are very tired), as reaction times are as vital to accident avoidance as good car brakes.
