The safety of any vehicle has to be a driver’s top priority. Whether you own a truck, an SUV or a pretty small car, keeping it safe for you, your family and friends and other road users is your responsibility. Many people can benefit from learning more about the proper care of their vehicle’s braking system, and from learning how to identify how to spot the early signs of brake problems.
Maintaining any part of your car is really important. As a driver you should be checking your car regularly, from the oil level to tire pressures. Drivers tend to get to know there vehicle quite well – if you drive your car every day you tend to be able to notice any differences in the noises it is making or how it is performing. If you are concerned about any vehicle which you drive, it is advisable to get it looked over by a qualified mechanic. Try and think of clear ways of describing the problems you are encountering. If you are not satisfied with the opinion or attitude of one garage, get a second opinion. If you are uncertain about prices check out a few places to see which you think is the best value, make sure that you choose a reputable place though, if a price sounds too good to be true it may be!
There are a couple of ways you can tell if your brake pads need attention. If your brake pads are only about a quarter of an inch in depth, then they will need replacing soon, once they reach 1/8 of an inch in depth it is important to get them changed as soon as possible, before they start to cause damage to your brake rotors as well. It is of course much more expensive to replace both brake pads and rotors, so catching the problem in time is also really important for financial reasons.
You may also be able to recognise when your brake pads are beginning to wear down as they will make a shrill squeaking noise when you brake. If you begin to hear squealing noises when you apply your brakes, it indicates it is time for you to check on your brake pads, if you are not confident checking these yourself, seek the advice of a qualified professional.

If you are become tired during a journey, stop off in a safe place to take a break. When it comes to driving, it is always better to be safe than sorry!
