Types of Brake Calipers

Brake calipers play an essential role in the brake system of any vehicle. The reason that brake calipers play such an important role in your brake system is because they work to slow down the wheels of the car, which is very important for any vehicle. Weather conditions, traffic, and animals leaping into the road are a few of the reasons that you will want to ensure that your car is able to stop in time.

Whether you drive a car, truck, SUV, or motorcycle, you are going to need to think about keeping your brake calipers in good condition. When they need to be replaced, it is important to do so right away. The most common sign of calipers that need replacement is fluid leakage. If you notice that your car seems to be leaking, it is possible that your brake calipers may be the cause. Before purchasing new calipers, the best thing that you can do is explore your options. There are two main types of brake calipers available for you to choose from.

1. Floating Calipers
These calipers, which are also commonly referred to as sliding calipers, move according to the rotation of the brake rotor. Floating calipers have a piston that is located on the inner brake pad. The body of the caliper is pulled by the outer brake pad. This will ensure that pressure is being applied to both sides of the brake. The biggest issue with floating brake calipers is that they are known to have a problem with sticking. This can be a problem because of dirt or corrosion that causes the movement of the calipers to change. In addition to being a problem with vehicles, this is also known to be a problem that commonly affects bicycles.

2. Fixed Calipers
Unlike floating calipers, fixed calipers do not move according to the brake rotor. There are pistons which are designed to be on both sides of the brake rotor. While floating calipers usually only have two pistons, fixed calipers can have as many as six. This is one of the main reasons that these brake calipers are known to be the more effective option. They also are known susceptible to the buildup of dirt or corrosion that can lead to sticking. On the downside, fixed calipers are known to be a much more expensive option. Since they are known to be of such a higher quality than floating calipers, it is not at all surprising that they will cost more money. Not only may they work more effectively, but fixed calipers will also last a longer period of time.

Before making the decision to purchase new brake calipers, the best thing that you can do is find out which kind you already have. Consider how long they lasted you, and what the problem seemed to be. If you find that floating calipers continuously need to be replaced, the best thing that you can do is try out fixed calipers. It is likely that they will be the much better option for your car’s brake system.
