The very reason that EBC Brakes only uses dimple drilled rotors or slots up to a maximum of 1mm in depth is that the through drilling of brake rotors has been proven to not only weaken the rotor structure, but to promote cracks emanating from the drill holes. Certain OEM manufacturers have been professional by using a specific vane pattern of rotor and carefully positioning on a jig the drill holes such that they fall exactly in the vanes of the rotor.
However, many aftermarket manufacturers do not take this type of care and we have even seen examples of through drilled holes going straight into the vane causing weakening of the rotor structure.
It is still our firm opinion that through drilling ANY BRAKE ROTOR is bad news.
Seeing is believing – the picture tells it all.
Below are examples of the surface drilling that EBC Brakes use that do not suffer from this cracking problem. If you want to read more about our wide aperture GD series slotted and dimpled rotors click here.
