Motocross attracts loads of new enthusiasts every year, and this seems set to continue. Just the idea of off road racing can get the adrenaline pumping! Motocross originated in the United Kingdom, where it was initially known as scrambles. The first known “scramble” was held in Camberley, Surrey, England in 1924. The motorcycles which were used initially were not specific - over time the motorbikes used evolved to meet the needs of motocross, such as far better suspension to make the rough terrain easier on the bike and of course, the rider. The sport has helped support the continued interest in motorcycles, and has also helped them to improve technologically. A number of manufacturers produce specialist motocross bikes, and it is important to choose the right one for you, which also fit’s the criteria for the kinds of terrain it will be ridden on. If you have just decided that you are interested in starting out at motocross, there are several things you can do to help things go smoothly. Firstly, do your research. There is a huge amount of information online about all kinds of sports, and motocross is no exception. Making sure to read from reputable sites, try to discover the history of the sport, and how it came to be what it is today. Try to find out what people who are new to motocross think about it. Once you know some background information, its time to find out where you can go locally to practice. If you find a club or a group of trustworthy local motocross enthusiasts, it may well be worth asking their opinion on which sort of bike is best for a beginner. Opinions are bound to vary, but you may well find a goldmine of information! The most important consideration for any sport is safety. If the motor cycle you will be using is quite old, you may wish to upgrade some its parts to allow for better performance. Being able to stop and slow down safely and effectively is vital in any vehicle, especially if they are using a lot of acceleration. Motocross rotors are now quite widely available, and can offer increased braking performance. If you wish to purchase good quality motocross rotors, or any other performance part, make sure you know which ones are suited to your bike, and which ones are the best quality. You may be on a budget, but as far as performance parts go, you tend to get what you pay for; it is worth getting the best motocross rotors you can afford. Once you feel that you and your motorbike are ready to go off road, make sure you find a suitable place to practice. If the land you wish to use is your own, and you know for sure that you can legally use bikes on it then you should be able to get a lot of practice - make sure you wear appropriate safety gear and that don’t go out alone in case you are involved in an accident. The safest way to enjoy motocross is through a local club who can help you learn more and more about motocross.
