Frequently Asked Questions about Sintering

What is Sintering?
Sintering is the process of heating and compacting various powders or ores to create different objects. What objects are made depends on their end use; i.e. plastic materials that are sintered go on to become objects such as pen nibs, whereas some metals go on to be created into brake pads. The actual word 'sinter' is a cognate of the English word 'cinder'.

How Does Sintering Work?
The actual process of sintering involves fusing the various materials together in a furnace (sometimes called a blast furnace) until the heat adheres the various particles together by forcing them to go below their melting points. Slightly different methods of sintering are used for different materials, but the overall concept remains the same.

What are the Advantages of Using Sintered Brakes on a Vehicle?
As stated previously, some brake pads are made from the process of sintering, as this gives them a greater degree of friction than standard brake pads do. This in turn can help to enhance the performance of the vehicle in question, as the driver will be aware his brakes are of good quality and should be able to stop safely when required. In addition to this, sintered brake pads tend to have a longer wear life than those of standard brakes, so can save money in the long run.

A lot of racing motorcycle riders' choose to fit sintered brakes on their bikes. This is because there are different types of sintered brake available to them, to suit different racing conditions.

The Different Types of Sintered Brakes Available
There are a variety of sintered brake types available on the market to buy from different retailers. Depending on the needs of the person looking to buy the brakes, there are options available to suit specific types of driving and driving conditions. For example, the green brake is an organic brake, used for mainly for cross country and general driving. It can be used on a wide variety of road surfaces with no problems. However, there is also a red brake, which has a higher degree of friction and therefore is great for using when racing down hills or slopes when extra braking is required. This is classed as a more high performance brake. The gold sintered brakes are best for when the vehicle has to pass through driving conditions that may involve a lot of mud, grit or sand. They have a long life expectancy, but can over heat quite easily in comparison to the other sintered brake types available, so should only be used when needed.

What Vehicles Are Sintered Brakes Available For?
A lot of people use sintered brakes on their motorcycles, especially in race situations. However, they are also available for ATVs, scooters and motocross vehicles amongst others.

If you are looking to buy sintered brakes for your vehicle, be sure to look around and compare prices before making a definite decision. If in any doubt about what brakes you need, be sure to talk to a professional about each type and the kind of vehicle you have to ensure you get the best advice possible.
