From sports cars to mountain bikes – buy the best pads

Motorbikes, cars and pedal bikes all use brake pads to slow them down quickly and safely, and it is important to ensure that they are kept in good condition. Motorbikes, cars, vans and mountain bikes all use brake pads that clamp onto a brake disc, which is then attached to the wheel. This system is very effective, and has been used for over a hundred years with success. Similarly, everyday pedal bikes also use brake pads, but these generally clamp directly onto the wheel when the brakes are applied. Again, this braking system is generally very effective (although some may remember childhood incidents when the front brake was applied too vigorously!). Pads remain one of the best ways to slow down any moving vehicle.

The reason that brake pads slow down cars and bikes when they grip the brake disc or wheel, is due to the friction that is caused between the moving and stationary objects. Whilst this friction is the reason for such fast and controllable deceleration is causes the pads to wear down over time. This will obviously render them less effective, so it is important to keep an eye on the condition of brake pads to ensure that they remain safe and effective.

For families who own several pedal bikes, it is a good idea to check the braking system of each bike every year or so; generally when the bikes are dusted off in the spring ready for use. During the summer months, children can often use their bikes a great deal, so it is important to keep an eye on the condition of the tyres and brakes to ensure that they will be safe, particularly if they ride their bikes anywhere near public roads. When they become worn it is generally relatively easy to purchase and re-fit pads for an everyday pedal bike. Many online stores will stock a good range, and the staff should be able to offer advice on the most suitable style or any additional tools that will be required if you give them a call or email. Most products should come with fitting instructions or guidelines to ensure that the pads are fitted correctly, however if they are unclear or not supplied, there will be a wide variety of guidance available online. It should be easy to find safety and fitting advice from a number of websites, and there may also be forums with helpful tips.

It is generally advisable never to scrimp when it comes to brake pads and similar parts, and whilst buying cheap items may not only be dangerous, it is often a false economy. Cheaply manufactured items may break much sooner than their more expensive counterparts, and paying for a respected manufacturer can often mean that the parts last much longer and repairs are not necessary for a good deal of time. For family mountain bikes this is very important, and high quality parts will mean a sound investment and a much safer ride for all the family.
