Motorcycle maintenance and Brakes

Motorcycles are admired by many people, from enthusiasts who own more than one bike, to those for whom getting their first bike is like a distant dream.  Which bikes people choose to own is a matter of personal taste, but no matter which you prefer, your bike will need regular maintenance to remain safe and for optimum performance.

As a responsible motorcycle owner, there are several maintenance checks that you should perform yourself on a regular basis.  These checks should enable you to keep an eye on certain aspects of your bike, they can help you spot issues early on to prevent any problems occurring or worsening.  Caring for your bike properly can save you money on repair bills and even save your life by keeping your motorcycle brakes and other parts working correctly.

It is recommended that each time you use your motorcycle; you should check the oil level.  Generally speaking, engines which are in good condition will not use much oil between services.  Before performing any checks, place the bike upright on a level surface.  Whether the bike has an oil inspection window or a dipstick, look to check the level is between the minimum and maximum markings.  If you find you need to top up the oil, make sure you use the correct motorcycle oil for your bike.  Also locate the coolant reservoir and check that the coolant level is between the minimum and maximum markings, as with oil, if necessary top the coolant up as instructed.

In order to test steering check that movement is smooth when the handlebars are moved from side to side.  The suspension can be checked by sitting on the bike and checking how it feels and sounds.  Check all bulbs, lights and brakes are functioning, as well as the horn.  These all help other road users to be aware of you and of your intentions to turn or slow down.  Drive chains should be well lubricated and not be too slack – if necessary, adjust tension and use extra lubricant.

Motorcycle brakes should be checked carefully.  All brakes should be firm in their application, rear brakes should be able fully applied without the pedal reaching its full travel, and front brakes fully applied without the lever reaching its full travel.  When released, motorcycle brakes must allow for wheels to turn freely without any drag or interference.  Checking hydraulic brake fluid levels is also important, if it has fallen below the acceptable level, top it up to an appropriate level with the correct fluid type.

Motorcycle brakes should be paid particular attention, as they are so important to safety, and so should tires.  Tire pressure should always be checked when tires are cold, not after a ride, and it is important that they are correct in accordance with a motorbikes guidelines.  Check with a tire pressure gauge, and if necessary pump up.

When necessary, take your motorbike in for a service so parts can be replaced if needed.  As with anything, if you care for your bike it should last you a long time.
