The Racing Career of Keith Huewen

Keith's first interest in motorcycling began at the age of 18 when he enjoyed performing stunts in his local county of Northamptonshire. It was at this time that he met two local racers Steve Trasler and Bill Langley. It was then that Keith began his initial tuition and practise in motorcycle racing.

Keiths first race season began in 1975 when he raced on a Crooks Suzuki, a twin cylinder bike which is a hybrid of the T500. After a succession of other race bike purchases and gaining employment as a mecanic before setting up his own Midlands Automatic Transmissions company with friend Paul Irwin, Keith continued to race with a determined winning attitude. He then managed to finish in 3rd place position at Croft in the Plum Puddins races in 1978.

It was at this point in his motorcycle career that events took an excellent turn for the best when Keith joined the Len Manchester Motorcycles team and won the premier British Championship and went on to race in the Transatlantic Trophy for Britain as number 16 which he decided to keep from then on!

Keith's race career escalated bringing in more well deserved cash over the next 4 years and then he managed to win the Grovewood Award in 1979 in his first oversees race in Imola Italy. During 1980 Keith sold on his share of his company to his friend Paul to dedicate all his time into becoming a racer of full time proportions. Keith, still racing on his TZ750 Yamaha purchased back in 1978 managed to gain a new lap record of 125.01 miles per hour in the International North West 200 which took place in Northern Ireland.

In 1981 Keith won 2nd place in the 350cc British Grand Prix and went on to finish 6th in the World Championships. A nasty crash and broken wrist kept him out of action during 82, but Keith continued to have more excellent finishes right up until 1989 including 5th place in the French GP at Le Mans in 83 along with 1st place in the premier championship in Britain and the MCN Masters, 3rd place in the MCN Superstock Championship (85).

These days you can catch Keith on Sky Sports TV commentatingon the very same Superbike races he loved to participate in!
