The light brownish material is hidden beneath the Brake-In™ coating EBC applies to all pads, but below is a photo of an SC pad before the coating is applied. However, the light colour is not the real reason for the ultra-low dust.

The table below shows EBC tests of all the popular ceramic blends we could find, and just look at the abrasion numbers – EBC is the lowest.
Also note that some competitor materials wore extremely fast, even in this basic street test we call an AKM test – one didn’t even finish the test, and others left streaks or marks on the rotors.
